Scratching, swatting, and complaining about the bugs is becoming as natural a background noise as a loon call. Under the red, itchy skin of last week was the start of a great Summer. The lake temperature rose to 70°F, the lake level didn't rise, and the weather was best described as hot.
Trillium season is over. Seemingly overnight, the blooms went from white and firm to purple and wilty.
Last Monday morning, some areas around the lake got a late season frost. Furnances were fired, some plants were damaged, but the mosquitoes seemed to shrug off the cold. The hungry (or is it thirsty?) pestilence is easier to deal with when it's cooler. Thicker clothing makes it hard for the bug lances to get to skin and almost impossible for them to pierce internal organs. When it's hot, thick clothes are not an option. DEET and duct tape are good ideas. The DEET keeps many at bay, and if a thoracic bite punctures a lung, just slap some duct tape on that sucking chest wound and you're good to go.
-Nemo's currently more mosquito bite than man.
