Days of Whine and DEET

June 3rd through 9th, 2019

Scratching, swatting, and complaining about the bugs is becoming as natural a background noise as a loon call. Under the red, itchy skin of last week was the start of a great Summer. The lake temperature rose to 70°F, the lake level didn't rise, and the weather was best described as hot. Trillium season is over. Seemingly overnight, the blooms went from white and firm to purple and wilty. Other flowers are experiencing somewhat of a renaissance. Last week did not have much rain. The ponds that dot the area around the lake remain overfilled with the outflow holding the lake level at record highs. So far, the islands have not been swamped by high water. The government archipelago is getting pretty small though. In addition to hot, last week had many footer friendly days of flat. A crew of several finished putting in the ski show dock at Water's Edge on Sunday just before the rain. All that's needed now for a great ski show are boats, skiers, and a crowd. We've been somewhat remiss in mentioning Water's Edge new dining deck. Several watched it going up on the LLAA webcam. It'll be a premium spot to watch the show while having a bite without the occasional soaking that feeders get on the dining dock. Last Monday morning, some areas around the lake got a late season frost. Furnances were fired, some plants were damaged, but the mosquitoes seemed to shrug off the cold. The hungry (or is it thirsty?) pestilence is easier to deal with when it's cooler. Thicker clothing makes it hard for the bug lances to get to skin and almost impossible for them to pierce internal organs. When it's hot, thick clothes are not an option. DEET and duct tape are good ideas. The DEET keeps many at bay, and if a thoracic bite punctures a lung, just slap some duct tape on that sucking chest wound and you're good to go.

-Nemo's currently more mosquito bite than man.
