Cool and Damp

Next »

June 15th through 21st, 2026

Last week was cool. Not Fonzally cool. Thermally cool. Highs on the warmer days touched 70°F and lows fell into the 40s°F on more than one morning. The week held a touch of rain, too. On the colder mornings, the lake steamed as it gave up its heat. The colder weather did not seem to affect the wiggly life that populates the water hazard on the 7th hole at the NCC. It's teeming with tadpoles. Due to the rains, all the water at the NCC is up. With the cold and the damp, it was deemed a good time to catch up on woodcutting for next year's cabin warmth and syrup season. Men and logs were gathered for one of our least favorite festivals of the season: Splitapalooza. It's best to wear gloves. The logs can be ill-tempered. They bite. As the men finished with their logs, Bactine, and bandages, the blue in the sky shaded to overcast. Then the lake got half an inch deeper. The clouds and rain canceled picnics, tanning events, and a ski show. A few of the more amped ski show members grabbed a little practice despite the rain and 57°F air. This was the second ski show in a row to be rained out. We're hoping for less rain, more crowd for next week's show. Last week was the kickoff of a music and gastronomic event just south of Lucerne. We left the rain and bitey logs to attend. The long walk from parking to the deep fried goodness is not without its charm. One of our favorite events at the festival this year was the the free Monster. There was but one caveat. You had to drink the free chest pain juice in a sort of corral. This encouraged the slamming of the beverage. The drinks were cool, tasty, and caffeinated. We left the area after our fitbits started to blink a red exclamation point. I didn't know they did that. The trip back to the damp shore of Lake Lucerne was augmented by an impressive sunset that took the edge off the energy drink crash. The weekend wasn't the warmest or the driest, but it was flat and there was some sun. Looking back, the temperatures and rain were pretty typical for the last week in spring. There's still plenty of time left before the snows of November make skiing and swimming unpleasant. So put on a suit, apply some tanning butter, and down a few energy drinks. Last we checked, they're free just south of the lake.

-Nemo has the Monster monkey on his back.
