A Brighter, Cooler Shade of Summer

It was cool last week. It didn't start that way. It began with highs in the mid 70s°F, but then an evil cold front passed through (I don't know how, but I'm sure squirrels were involved.) and highs were almost 20°F below normal. It somewhat recovered by the weekend, but a summer is never the same after such a thermal body blow this late in the season.

The start of the week was less cold, and more Eurasian Milfoil was pulled. For the first three days of last week, a special boat loaded with weed sucking machinery slurped the deceptively delicate invasive aquatic underbrush out of the lake.

There was some rain as the summer lost its already tenuous grip.

After the rain, there was sun, a few clouds, and plenty of cold. High temperatures struggled to get to the mid 50s°F.

The lake temperature is currently hovering around 70°F.

Swimming and diving is getting a little hypothermic, but it does keep down the swelling of any late season injuries.

Soon Lucerne's temperature will fall well below 70°F. The sun is setting on the sane swimming season.

Last week, the activity at the hummingbird feeders is inversely proportional to that of the rafts.

If you don't look too close, the forest around the lake still has an un-fall like appearance.

If you observe more closely, there are a few autumnal signs in them trees.

The Hodag water show is done for the year.

With all the summer events, some of the more notable can fall through the cracks. We'll make the time to see them next year.

Footstock was held two weeks ago, but you can still see the figure eight.

The Labor Day parade in Crandon was very well attended.

I don't recall any parade in Crandon being so packed.

If you were tall enough and looked to the north, you could see the figure eight worn into the weeds of Peshtigo Lake from above the north end of the parade.

The main event on Sunday was the Knott Lane Golf Open at the NCC course.

Nine foursomes competed for fame, glory, and small plastic trophies.

Some of the teams were dressed more formally than others.

The after party at the bar was very well attended with the music, beverage, and bar rail bowling going on well after the sun had set. There was even a nacho cheese machine! The aftermath of this event is why this summary page went up a little later than usual.

There was also the Brush Run World Championship off road race held at the Crandon International Raceway. Having navigated the parade traffic, we completely lost any desire to go to this extremely people-ly event. Maybe next year. Congratulations to team Kemp for winning this year's Knott Lane Open with a two under par 33. Well done guys! The next scheduled bar night will be Pumpkin Carving some time in early October. We should have the bar put back togather by then.
