Fall's Early Dawn

Last week started off wet and cool. The wet moved on. Alarmingly, the cool remained. The horror. The horror. An early start of spring or summer is wonderful. Early fall and winter, not so much. There are those that celebrate the end of summer and the coming of crisper weather. We can only hope that these people get the help they so desperately need.

The rain total for the start of the week was just over half an inch.

At the start of the week, about a dozen foulers were still sliming up roads and lawns on the north end of the lake. And then, except for one lone mutant, they moved on. Huzzah! They'll not be missed.

It's turning into a pretty good apple year.

The birds continue to be super active. They can consume two suet blocks and empty a feeder in less than a day without the help of any evil, rotten squirrels.

The hummingbirds continue to go wild in a push to sugar up before heading south.

I can't speak for the other days of the week, but on Wednesday the deer in the pens behind Crandon's courthouse were active and fun. We feed them the common broadleaf plantain that grows just outside the enclosure. They seem to have eaten all the plantain that grew inside the fence.

They really, really like it.

On Saturday, Eagle River had a Bring-In-The-Stuff-The-Dump-Won't-Take event. We had a couple of dead microwaves, monitors, and air conditioners, so we journeyed to Eagle River and queued up.

The event started at 9:00 AM. We got there around 10:00 AM. Two and a half long hours later (15 minutes before the event ended), we dropped off our stuff. Notes to those that will do this next year: Get there early with an empty bladder, pack a lunch, bring playing cards and snacks.

The NCC golf course continues to be in good shape. The Knott Lane open is just a week away. Get your tee times soon.

The fire danger is low and the evenings are cold. Campfires are encouraged to keep the early and disturbing fall chill at bay.

Summer '25 seems to be ending. This is way too early. The lake temperature is close to falling below the 70°F mark. Any further swimming, diving, and water skiing will include a shivering component. This autumnal turn of events has the men looking for hats and singing old Simon & Garfunkel songs, "Hello Hypothermia my old friend, I've come to flirt with you again...". Or something like that, I wasn't really paying attention. There's still a few tee times available for this year's Knott Lane Open starting at 1:00 PM Sunday, August 31st at the NCC. Don't miss your chance for about 7,000 steps (if you walk), endless glory, and a small plastic trophy.
