Final Frost

May 23rd through 29th, 2022

Lake Lucerne
Last week started off downright cold. On Monday morning the lake was steaming, the air was freezing, and thoughts of Summer seemed like fanciful dreams.
Lake Lucerne
Until the sun hit it, there was also frost on the lawn.
Lake Lucerne
It got better. Lucerne was calm and steam free the following morning.
Lake Lucerne
Despite the early week frost, the hills around the lake continue to have their lush greenery on.
Lake Lucerne
Then the rains came.
Lake Lucerne
By the time it ended, the lake was almost an inch deeper. Currently, the lake level may be just short of an all time record, but it's a close thing.
Lake Lucerne
After the sun came back to us, we were joined by an astounding amount of hummingbirds.
Lake Lucerne
Many ponds around the lake are filled with an even more astounding amount of tadpoles.
Lake Lucerne
Deck posts around the lake continue to have an average amount of squirrel.

The late Spring has lengthened the trillium season this year.

Still, a few of the flowers are starting to signal the end of the trillium

Plan A was to put in the show dock on the weekend.
Lake Lucerne
The ice damaged shore connection point changed that plan. High water ice-out: Fear It.
Lake Lucerne
While the engineers plan a repair, a few sections were staged. Plan A was abandoned. We hastily came up with a plan B.
Lake Lucerne
I liked plan B far more than Plan A.
Lake Lucerne
The lake temperature continues to lag into Memorial Day weekend. A 58°F reading will keep the ice off Lucerne, but fill the hills with the startled screams of anyone entering the lake.
Lake Lucerne
Just before sunrise last Monday, the temperature bottomed out a 26°F. Let's not do that again until October. There was an uptick of boat activity during the weekend, but not as much as past Memorial Day's. This could be because of the 58°F water, the price of gas, or a fear of tadpoles. What ever the reason, I'd expect the traffic to pick up some between now and Labor Day. The first ski show of the year is scheduled for June 8th. The new Plan A is to get the show dock in before then.

-Nemo likes to proceed directly to Plan B as long as the limes hold out.
