Song of Fire and Ice Without the Fire

December 28th, 2020 through January 3rd, 2021

Lake Lucerne
It was seasonally cold last week. Many days the lows were in the single digits and the lake was awarded with -10°F one morning. During the day, temperatures hit the teens and twenties which were partnered with light wind and plenty of sunshine. Near the weekend, the lake area saw a repeated morning event...
Lake Lucerne
Hoarfrost!.
Lake Lucerne
Late in the week, every morning it daubed the deciduous.
Lake Lucerne
It covered the conifers.
Lake Lucerne
It coated what's left of the cattails.
Lake Lucerne
Some even popped up on the lake ice.
Lake Lucerne
The sun would burn off the fine crystals by noon.
Lake Lucerne
The snow covering the ground is only about 3 inches deep. The low levels of the white stuff is keeping many snowmobiles in the garage or trailer.
Lake Lucerne
Nobody skied, but there were some tubers.
Lake Lucerne
Under those UTVs and tubers, there was almost 7 inches of ice, with thicker ice being reported in the southern and central parts of the lake.
Lake Lucerne
Local roads are covered with a packed layer of snow. Walking isn't too bad, no running though.
Lake Lucerne
Knott Lane also has its share. No running there either.
Lake Lucerne
The first bar night in a long time was held on New Year's Eve. Notably missing were any flaming drinks and shots. This may have been due to a surplus of limes that made gin and vodka tonics the drink of choice for many.
Lake Lucerne
The historic coin-ops that were installed during the past few months were enjoyed by several for their functionality and by one for the pretty colors.
Lake Lucerne
There's enough snow on the lake to build a few forts, but it's a close thing. We could use a few more inches before the 30th Annual Lake Lucerne Bottle Rocket War scheduled in just under 2 weeks. While the lack of heavy snow will complicate some events, if the snow drought continues, packing trails and hiking maple to maple during the upcoming tapping season is gonna be trivial. Huzzah!

-Nemo, despite the sunny days, is shamefully untanned.
