Delightfully Mild

January 4th through 10th, 2021

Lake Lucerne
Last week started off with mild high temperatures, little snow, and plenty of sun. The gentle weather would continue for the entire week with the highs approaching freezing and the lows on a few mornings falling down to January.

And there was hoarfrost.

On most of the mornings for the second week in a row, first light bounced off an ice flocking that covered trees, cars, and cattails.

Almost all of the coating burned off by the afternoon, leaving behind only the echos of last Fall.

The sun and "warmth" resulted in the Bar cutting its first teeth of the Winter.

Sunsets were a mixed bag. Many evenings had thick cloud cover that made for an early dark. Others were cloudless, resulting in mornings like Thursday's 4°F, but a few held the proper mix of clouds and blue that painted a better evening sky.

January mornings and a little ambition added up to a nice rectangular skating rink just South from the northeastern corner of Lucerne.

The sun has sublimed most roads free of snow, but not Knott Lane where packed snow-ice continues to cover the gravel.

Over the weekend, construction began on this year's forts for the annual Lake Lucerne Bottle Rocket War which is scheduled for this Saturday at 7pm (1/16/2021).

The snow on the lake is a little light this year. The snow miners dug up enough ore to refine it into a front wall.

The northern fort has yet to sprout from the ice. It has also been reported that the North is short on manpower and there's talk of a draft. A lottery is tentatively scheduled for this Wednesday. All able bodied individuals between the ages of 5 and 83 with a thirst for adventure and a hat will be deemed eligible.

The good news is that the weather should remain mild well into next week. The bad news is the snow shortage. There are already rumors of desperate construction battalions stealing snow from driveways, lawns, and Laona. Local governments are considering passing ordinances that limit the size of new forts. The Southern fort builders have already declared their fort a light truck to avoid complying with these proposed new standards. It should be a good show visible from the knottlane webcam on Saturday around 7:00 PM
