Autumnal Angst

August 19th through 25th, 2019

Lake Lucerne
The lake did a lot of streaming last week as it gave up its heat. The evenings were cool and the mornings downright cold. The end of August can be a delicate time. It's not unusual to have the hot continue, but all it takes is one Canadian push for furnaces to fire. No frost yet, but we're looking for hats.

There were other more subtle signs of impending Fall aside from the cold. We have quite the crop of eensy milkweed pods along local roads.

Some foliage is looking very early October..

Sunsets still had a summery look to them if not a very warm feel.
Lake Lucerne
There's a much larger batch of deliciously deadly berries on the North end of the lake than there were last year.

Someone planted way too many deer at the NCC golf course. It took Mrs. Nemo more time than you would think to shoo them off the tee on nine.

The last ski show of 2019 was surprisingly well attended.

Those that came for spectacular acts did not go away disappointed.
Lake Lucerne
Those that came to see splash and spray were equally pleased.

On Saturday, the last vestige of the weekly production, the show dock, was scheduled to be packed away for next year.

A larger, stronger crew than we can ever remember made short work of the disassembly.

The sugarmen hauled in another few ore carts of wood and are mostly ready for next year's maple syrup season.

Others used softer, more refined wood to build structures that will shelter deck furniture by Winter and become a video arcade during the Summer.

The calendar claims we have about another month of Summer. The weather has a more mid-Spring like feel but with the advantage of not having several hundred maple sap buckets to wash and stack. Last we checked, the lake water is just above 70°F. That's cooler than last year at this time, but still okay for swimming. You just need a few minutes to get used to it. That, plus shivering is just a faster, more impatient form of tai chi, so there's that whole fitness thing, too. The annual Knott Lane golf tournament is scheduled for next week Saturday (August 31st). Get your foursome together, sign up, and chase the deer from the tees. The after party and award ceremony at the bar may or may not feature special venison based beverages.
