More Wet, Less Hot

August 5th through 11th, 2019

Lake Lucerne
It rained last week. Sure, there were other elements of Summer there, too. There were unmowed lawns, wildlife, warmth, and greenery everywhere, but over three inches of rain trumped them all. The record lake level may hold going into September.

Rain can put the kibosh on golf, lawn mowing, ski shows. and other outdoor activities. Some can be made grumpy. Others seem to really like the wet weather.
Lake Lucerne
Area plants seem to really like the weather, too..

The sugarmen mined impressive amounts of quality wood (ash, maple, oak, not bass wood) between the drops. Only a cord or four to go.

Just after mid-week, some wonderful friends scored us tickets to attend a match that included some local footballers just South of the lake.
Lake Lucerne
They were outplayed on both sides of the ball, but the other guys kept on turning it over (interceptions, a fumble, and a poorly fielded punt seen here). The good guys ended up winning!

The Footstock grounds are currently crowd free. That will change next weekend when the figure eight barefoot world champion will be determined.

The new announcer stand doesn't have the rickety, it's-going-down feel of the old one.. Good work Bucky and Jim.

The final dock sections were put in by a crew on Saturday.
Lake Lucerne
Great job Dan, Jim, and the crew (seen here in her entirety).
Lake Lucerne
In a disturbing but not unexpected development, the water temperature of Lake Lucerne has dropped to 74°F. It's still quite swimmable, but not as nice as the 78°F water we had just a few weeks ago.
Lake Lucerne
It almost seems like it's getting clearer if that's even possible..
Lake Lucerne
There's a lot more little snails snailing up the bottom than in the past. They are a little painful and totally gross when stepped upon.
Lake Lucerne
There was a lot of boat traffic on the lake last weekend. Whether it was pent up skiing demand that built up during the rainy part of the week or the last runs before the boat is pulled was unclear. What is clear is that the hills are very green, the air is very sweet, and the lake level is very high. And the bar's lawn needed mowing. The rising lake and driving rain has made the lower parts of shore lawns wet and bog-like. Our lawn tractor lacks a large rear view mirror. This was the second reason a tow rope was not added to the rear deck of the mower. We were also unsure if it needed to be registered for the water with the DNR.

-Nemo didn't kneeboard up the lower lawn last week.
