Fishing, Eating, and Dropping Rocks

June 4th through 7th, 1998

Lake Lucerne
We arrived after work on Thursday to fish and enjoy the June warmth. We did fish, but the June warmth was nowhere to be found. Day time high tempertures struggled to get to 60°F and the lows were in the 30s°F. Ick. On the plus side, there was no rain and the wind was light the entire weekend.
Lake Lucerne
The fishing was good. If somehow fish rise up and take over, we'll be tried in fish court. This will undoubtedly be "exhibit A"..
Lake Lucerne
The lack of warm made for less swimming and more off-water adventure. Climbing the fire tower at Sugarbush Hill never gets old and the view from the top is a fitting reward for trudging up all those steps.
Lake Lucerne
Taking a rock up to drop off the tower is just the cherry on top.
Lake Lucerne
There's a slab of concrete on one side of the tower. Rock dropping is more fun when you hit the slab.
Lake Lucerne
After a rock drop, jets of rock material on a freshly bonked slab just underscore the fun.
Lake Lucerne
With the cold evenings, campfires were mandatory all weekend.
Lake Lucerne
After the tower, it was decided to try to find the somewhat mythical "Dawson Lake" just North of Wabikon.
Lake Lucerne
By edict, no vehicles were used in this quest.
Lake Lucerne
We missed a turn and ended up deep in the northwoods.
Lake Lucerne
We did not find the lost lake, but we did discover "Johnnies Resort" More accurately, we discovered "Johnnies Resort's bar",
Lake Lucerne
To fuel all that climbing and hiking (and amazingly a ski run) there was Duck's. We eat here mostly because of the mushroom soup, but the fish fry is pretty good, too.
Lake Lucerne
As we struggled to get up to leave, we all agreed that we ate too much soup.
Lake Lucerne
After sleeping off the mushroom soup sweats, we got up and over-ate at the Hotel Crandon because, hair of the dog and all.
Lake Lucerne
We were hoping for a warmer start to the Summer, but even when cool, there's plenty of fun and adventure for the taking in the northwoods. With not much walk left in our legs, we headed back to the desks and responsibilities of work to heal up and make money to do it all over again in the near future.

-Nemo, after one more bowl, would have been more soup than man.
