Labor Day Camping

September 1st & 2nd, 1996

Lake Lucerne
We were stuck at the office at the start of Labor Day weekend and not planning on going up North. A phone call from the northwoods about pulling lifts and piers changed that plan. We arrived early on Sunday and, with the lifts and piers coming out on Monday, decided to add camping on the island on Wabikon to the task list.
Lake Lucerne
A canoe was filled with tents, sleeping bags, fire wood, and an anti-fallout device (the one with the hat) and we headed about 3 miles east to Lake Wabikon.
Lake Lucerne
The launch just to the West of Johnnies is not so developed, but works fine for canoes.
Lake Lucerne
The camping site with the big rock was taken. One of the auxiliary sites on the west side of the island was judged just as good.

There might have been some beer involved.

A tree that fell into the lake in front of the campsite works surprisingly well as a natural pier.
Lake Lucerne
We got back to Lake Lucerne early on Monday to pull lifts and piers. When we arrived, a young roughneck took Mrs Nemo's hat and made off with it. The hat was recovered sometime later. All the wood and metal contraptions came out of the lake with few injuries. We'll be back in a few weeks to check on the leaf colors.
