Ice-Out 1996

May 8th through 12th, 1996

Lake Lucerne
We arrived at the lake on Wednesday at 11:00 PM. Thursday morning's light showed that while there was still plenty of ice on the lake, it was thinning and lacy. Ice-out was coming soon.
Lake Lucerne
A paddle boat was launched to explore the ice sheets and get a better feel for when the lake would be open.
Lake Lucerne
The sheets of cold broke easily at the edges. The broke bits were this thick.
Lake Lucerne
It looks like we may have missed one during the great stick pickup back in January.
Lake Lucerne
A few ducks were sent to check on the center of the web-like sheets. They never did report back, but it was clear that it's thick enough out there to support a couple of ducks.
Lake Lucerne
The quick melt of all the snow has pushed the lake up past the beach on the North end.
Lake Lucerne
All that knees bent, running, and paddling about behavior called for a hardy dinner on Friday. We went to Duck's.
Lake Lucerne
Cheddar Vegetable is meh, but we all love Cream of Chicken Wild Rice!
Lake Lucerne
The rest of the food was really good, too.
Lake Lucerne
After Duck's, the Liquor Load was perused for a peppermint beverage with a hint of hot cinnamon. After a short while, Mrs. Nemo found one.
Lake Lucerne
Saturday morning's hangovers were paired with appropriately regretful reading.
Lake Lucerne
On Saturday, as soon as the ice went out, piers started to go in.
Lake Lucerne
And the Trillium started to pop in the woods.
Lake Lucerne
We hiked around the lake for fun and to see the new Rustic Haven Resort sign.
Lake Lucerne
The lake is ice free and some piers are already in. Ours are not. If any one is up and bored, feel free to haul ours from the shore and put it in, but first please move the giant swing to the North side of the dock. We think it will work better there. Thanks in advance. The highs for the weekend were in the 50's°F and the lows were in the 30's°F. You could see your breath in the morning, but the chance for snow is all but gone. The lake is still a little bit cool for any serious swimming. For safety, be sure to wear a wet or dry suit when putting in our pier.

-Nemo has no illusions that the swing will be moved or the pier in before his next time up.
