The Conventional Summer's End

Next »

August 31st through September 6th, 2026

Last week started off calm and hot. Some highs got close to 90°F. Dew points pushed past 60°F. Without the 7:30 PM sunsets, the days would have been indistinguishable from mid July. On more than one occasion, Lucerne totally glassed out. The blue and green that dominated the northwoods was at times augmented with sunset yellows and reds. Some of the trees are also expanding the local color palette. With the heat and humidity came clouds, thunder, and some much needed rain. The rain events added only about a quarter of an inch each time the rumbling began, but that'll add up over the course of a few storms. Throughout the week, the waters of Lucerne remained cool (think low 70s°F) and crystal clear. The fish are still thick and active on the cribs. We saw a pickup in skiing activity last week. This was probably due to the conditions and the lateness of the season. On the weekend, boat traffic soared. On the last day of the week, the Knott Lane Open saw some of the best weather of the week. The NCC course was in pretty good shape, too. One of the ten teams dressed in a more patriotic fashion than the other nine. The after party and award ceremony started off with all the dignity and temperance you would have expected from an old northern Wisconsin bar. The crowd size crescendoed at around 6:30 PM. The bar dice came out just as the sun went down. The shots started off innocently enough with the alien secretion. The bailey's comet made a brief and fiery pass. Then came evil. Malort, because those pants aren't going to Sh*t themselves, is the main reason this summary page may be up a little later than usual. The Summer bonus period begins around Labor Day. The warm and humid that has become a good friend over the past several months can be snatched from us any day. Because of this autumnal reality, now is the time to push past the injuries (you may want to set those fractures before pushing) and hangovers (Boo, Malort!) to boost those summer schedule points before time runs out and ice puts the kibosh on many forms of lake play. Remember, if you're not limping, letting out little yelps when getting up, or occasionally contemplating a trip to urgent care, you're not trying hard enough.

-Nemo supports God, Country, and this morning, Temperance.
