Pleasantly Summer

August 3rd through 9th, 2026

The air temperature, lake temperature, and mood of last week could be best described as pleasant. Highs touched the 80s°F on several days. The lake temperaure was well into the 70s°F. There was enough pizza and beer to keep the men happy and satiated. All is good north of Hwy 64 except we could really use more rain. The two tenths of an inch of rain we measured on Monday was all the rain Lucerne got for the week. Wednesday's ski show had a clear-ish sky, a good crowd, and an increasingly early sunset. The show was as great as it always is. The lake area has reached peak hummingbird. They cruise the shoreline in packs emptying full feeders in hours. The hordes of mosquito that infest the woods and exsanguinate the un-DEETed around Lucerne also seem to be at peak. The roads are getting thick with deer. Most are fawn-ish and, if car touched, will inflict under a thousand dollars in damage, but a few could take out an entire front end. There are fewer mosquitoes and deer on Lucerne's shoreline and enough late blooming flora to provide a splash of color. On Saturday, Crandon Water Shows had its annual alumni show. It was well attended. We loved the display of old show apparel. The alumni were augmented with a few current members for the show. A motor was finicky and the crowd light for one of the first Eurasian Milfoil finding/pluckings on the east shore. The NCC course is in great shape. Many of the water hazards are getting less full. We need some rain. It looked like a good storm was going to wack Lucerne on Sunday, but all the rain passed south of the lake and its watershed. Nuts. As mentioned in last week's update, Lucerne's level hasn't been this low at the start of August for a decade. If this trend continues, getting boats off lifts might become a very unpleasant task.

-Nemo's tan, tired, and full of pizza.
