Last week was a tale of frosty mornings and just on the wrong side of warm evenings. That changed on Saturday after sunrise cooked off the patchy frost, heated the air to jacketless levels, and started to warm the lake water. The golf course was packed on Memorial Day. The day after, not so much. Memorial Day weekend or thereabouts is the traditional time to put ski boats into the water. It's also the traditional time to fret about the lower unit's health and the state of the battery. Huzzah! On the north end of Lucerne, we've seen more orioles than ever. They have been feasting on the bar's spare Old Fashioned oranges. Local squirrels were told to not rob the oriole feeder... Evil little buggers. We had a few rain events last week. They were sporadic, short, and resulted in less than a tenth of an inch for the week. We could have used more, but we were relieved that what we got was not snow. During the frosty mornings, Lucerne would give up any heat it had gained the day before. Most of the trillium have made it to June. The lake started to warm up to tolerable levels on Sunday. A few swimmers were spotted paddling up the north end. By Sunday evening, the lake temperature in the northeastern corner was just shy of 64°F. The lake water is super clear with just a pinch of tree pollen. The lake level fell 2 inches during the month of May. We could use a good storm or three. The first ski show of the year is just days away. With the water temperature in the lower 60s°F we are hoping that the costumes don't clash too much with the bluish skin.<br><br><br>-Nemo almost swam, then thought better of it.
