Pumpkins in the Rain

October 23rd through 29th, 2023

Last week was overcast and a little warmer than normal. There was no snow, no skiing, and no tennis. There was some rain. The rain started at the beginning of the week. We did not get much by the end of the first day. The plan was to not empty the rain gauge so as to get a cumulative total for the entire week. The second day of rain added an impressive amount to that total. The third day of rain added another quarter of an inch. By the time the rain ended on Friday, the lake was over 2.7 inches deeper. By late Friday afternoon, the clouds started to break up and the sun came out. A short while later, the clouds regrouped and a few light showers hit the lake area again. The lake temperature is holding at just above 52°F. The rain wasn't the only reason for the lack of skiers. The weather pushed any end of season mowing or campfires (the fire danger is currently low!) into next week. The flatness of the lake made getting some of the remaining stuff out out the water a little easier. On Saturday, the bar was prepared for pumpkin carving. The cleaning and ordering included a rare decluttering of booths 1 and 2. Many of the 2 dozen or so attendees costumed up. I believe this one was the most scary. The end result of the evening was great. The next day's sunset was also great. On Sunday, it was clear that the rain had moved on, leaving behind some colder air, leafless trees, and a deeper lake. Many, well...me anyway, are curious about the state of the lake level for October. The first part of the month was kind of dry and the last week was sort of wet. The lake currently looks a little higher than it was on the 1st of October. We'll measure it on the 1st of November to see how much higher. Pumpkin carving turned into one of the best events of the year. Thanks to everyone who came and made it such a great night. Looking forward, it's gonna get cold. And it looks like it's gonna stay cold. The Annual Ice-In Contest will be up sometime this week.

-Nemo's planning on one more lawn mowing before the snow flies.
