Autumnbling into Fall

September 4th through 10th, 2023

Lake Lucerne
Last week started off hot. Insanely hot, with highs in the mid 90s°F and dew points in the 70s°F. That changed. In less than 72 hours, high temperatures fell by almost 40°F. After that, in the morning, a steaming lake was not an uncommon thing.
Lake Lucerne
The hot weather at the start of the week has been good for the bar's unplanned, chipmunk planted corn crop.
Lake Lucerne
The lake was lumpy during the celebrated hot period. The roughness did not discourage swimmers and divers from escaping the balmy air by jumping into the 74°F water.
Lake Lucerne
After last week's wavey, scorching period ended, Lucerne returned to its familiar super clear state. The falling lake level has made the rocks on the north end a little closer to the surface. If you value your prop, do not motor over them.

A mob of geese demonstrated their boldness and regularity all over lawns on the north end of Lucerne.
Lake Lucerne
The surly bunch attempted to bring their goose-y goodness to Potawatomi Trail until a Wilson's Septic Service truck came around the corner. None of the honkers were harmed. As a result of the poor aim of the Wilson's Septic Service truck, the first "foie gras night" at the bar was canceled.
Lake Lucerne
Peak color is about two or three weeks away, but the un-green patches around Lucerne are becoming noticeable.
Lake Lucerne
The cooler temperatures have made hiking, tennis, and golf (seen here...sort of), much more pleasant events.

Some of the deer on the NCC course have become more courteous, sticking to the non-fairway side of the cart paths during drives. It was further noted that the blistering drive I shanked to the right did not harm any deer. As a result, the first "venison kabob night" at the bar was canceled.
Lake Lucerne
Some deer-y foursomes continued their fawningly slow play with their fearless fairway antics.

Last year, the Forest County Fair did not have a midway. We were not amused. This year the rides were back in all their lighted, carney, funnel caked glory. Huzzah!
Lake Lucerne
At the tail of the weekend, it rained.
Lake Lucerne
By Sunday morning, we had an inch on the ground with, it turned out, another third of an inch to come. Getting boats off lifts will be far less stressful for the next week or three.

Dedication: noun, the quality of being dedicated or committed to a task or purpose. "Their dedication to their fishing in the cold morning rain was inspirational".

So last week, between a really fun slalom run and the rain, a wasp targeted the side of my right foot. The little b*stard didn't miss. In a few days, the swelling should be down enough to cram the foot into a binding for a few more ski runs. For their buggy badness, late Summer wasps are now on "The List". The Summer became much more Fallish last week. Going forward, as long as the lake temperature stays above 62°F and the swelling goes down, there's still plenty of Summer to be had before pumpkin carving becomes a thing. Be diligent. Don't let the supply of ibuprofen and energy drinks (and maybe Benadryl®) get too low.
