Last week started all August-y with plenty of sun, a little drought, and high temperatures in the 80s°F. As the week progressed, weather that reminded us all that it's still Spring took over.
At the start of the week, the warm air pushed the lake temperature up to 74°F. That wouldn't last.
In the days after the water show, it got cooler. This did not seem to reduce the number of boats flying around Lucerne.
By the weekend, the wind shifted from the North and the lake temperature shifted to September. During the celebrated warm period at the start of the week, divers knew that the 74°F water temperature was brittle. If a dive took you below 8 feet or so, the water got colder. The wind from the north took all that warmer surface water to the south and the colder water started to well up on the north end. By Sunday the lake temperature fell to 61°F. Friday's 37°F morning low did not help. Campfire size directly reflected the loss of lake heat.
There was also rain. A little rain. Very, very little. It was the kind of storm that had some commenting that we could use more rain. The tenth of an inch we got was nice, but we need more. Just not during next Wednesday's ski show at Waters Edge starting at 6:30 PM with a pre-show shortly before that. A return of the warmth that scorched the area during the Memorial Day weekend would be nice, too. Along with the cooler weather, came the end of the tree pollen season. The lake water is confirming this with its clarity. Lucerne is usually a very clear lake, but now we are seeing bottom features from the drone in over 25 feet of water.
