May 8th through 14th, 2023

Last week felt summery. The air was warm, the trees were green (ish), and the sounds of ATVs filled the woods. About the only thing that belied the tanning trend was the lake temperature, 54°F last we checked. Winds were light most of the week. For those without a boat in, the flatness of Lucerne taunted skiers and footers alike, but mostly footers. We've been coming up to the shore of Lake Lucerne for over half a century now, but we learned a few new things last week. These plants are called Trout Lilies, they are edible*, and if you ask the internet how to eradicate them from your lawn, you'll make botanists cry.

*A few people suffer **emesis after eating them.

**The forceful ejection of some or all of the contents of the stomach through the mouth. As horrifically entertaining as it may be, I'm thinking NO on trout lily garmish night at the bar. The trillium are also up! They too are edible (parts of them anyway, sort of, see emesis for the parts that are not toxic.) There was golf! Sort of. The NCC course is open, mowed, and filled with shanked approach shots and three putts. I'm thinking of getting some of those pine tree car air fresheners to hang on a few of my clubs to cover the stench. Several years ago, a large pine in front of the bar damaged part of the deck when it lost a chunk of its top during a Fall wind event. The tree's crown has been looking a little deader as of late. An arborist with a huge chain saw was called to trim the top a bit. As the saw drowned out the ambient sound of ATVs, several stopped by to watch Or it might have been the bits of corn and bird food that had the crowd growing. We were told not to expect the top of this brute, even in the most violent wind storm, to cause further deck damage. So much better. I am told that trout lilies taste like a freshly cut lawn smells...a sweet grassy flavor. As much as I like the smell of a freshly cut lawn, I've never once wanted to eat one. Then there's the whole forceful ejection of some or all of the contents of the stomach through the mouth thing. While that's couched in the phrase "a few people", the term "Hard Pass" comes to mind. Last week, while not munching on suspect greenery, there was also pier planting, shore raking, and lawn mowing events. The one event we did not get last week was rain. The lake level remains high, but it's getting drier. Last we checked, the fire danger was at Very High. If we don't get any rain soon, it may go up another notch (Extreme) or two (Run!).

-Nemo did enjoy Mrs Nemo's wild ramp mushroom soup.
