Pumping Carving Week

October 24th through 30th, 2022

Last week presented the northwoods with a smorgasbord of tasty weather. It started with some warmth and rain, then cold, then flurries, and finally ended with some warmth and sun. The end of the week was particularly nice. The rain at the start of the week was accompanied with some wind that created impressive rollers that battered the north shore. The lake went up about a half an inch after the storms moved out. The lake's temperature did not move up. We are currently at 47°F. Nobody swam, but some did remove a lift from Lucerne and confirmed that the lake is cold. In between the rain, there was golf! The course was well flagged and snow free. Then came the cold and with it some unforecasted flurries. The midweek hard frost was not unexpected and not wildly popular. Ice crystals coated the grass until the sun came out. The frozen air on the few stubbornly attached leaves was impressive and confirmed the hard freeze nature of a few of the mornings. The evenings were a little less cold but could still be described as chilly. The still air and long shadows made for some good campfire weather. The birds seemed to be more active last week. It's getting hard to keep the bar's feeder filled. The amount of seed and suet they eat seem to be proportional to their size. The less said about this guy's appetite the better. The squirrels and chipmunks seem to have some sort of truce. That can't be good. They are undoubtedly up to some sort of evil. The bar was opened on Saturday for the annual pumpkin carving event. The event was attended by a moderate crowd of around two dozen. Drinks were drunk, food was consumed, and pumpkins were given faces. I'd like to thank everyone who came and made it a memorable bar night. The leaves are almost completely off the trees. I'll be posting the time lapse of the hill on the east side of the lake soon. In just two minutes you'll be able to see it go from green to leafless. The few wisps of clouds at sunset (and the dew point) kept the weekend morning frost at bay. The loggers were done and golf was back at the end of the week. Many of the removed trees will not be missed. One of the discussions during the pumpkin carving bar night centered around the lake level. It's going down. The half inch of rain we got early last week has not stopped the decline. We'll get a measurement to confirm or dispute the general consensus of the lowering of the lake level on the first of November. The bottom line is we need more rain. Or snow. But we prefer rain. In addition to the monthly lake measurement, I'll try to get the annual Lake Lucerne Ice-In Contest up either this week or next.

-Nemo prefers rain to snow
