October 17th through 23rd, 2022

Last week started off all cold and Novembery. There was cold (of course), wind, and no small amount of snow. This October wintery event is not uncommon and is even rumored to be the fifth Horseman of the Snowpocalypse also known as the "October Snowprize". We measured 2.5 inches of snow on the bar's deck. Due to the unfrozen nature of the ground, there could have been a little less off deck accumulation. The cold and snow seems to have resparked interest in the bar's bird feeder. Mrs Nemo counted over 40 juncos at one point. The squirrels have been ominously quiet as of late. Given their past evilness, I can't help but think they are up to something. Eventually the sky cleared. The October sun burned the snow from the trees and warmed the water. Warmed might be a bit of an exaggeration. In the shallower water in the northeastern corner of the lake the water temperature went from 45°F to 50°F. Nobody swam. On almost all trees, the melting snow took with it many of the remaining leaves. There were a few outliers. Then there were some that could not decide to drop them all or go full peak. As the week progressed, the weather grew warmer. High temperatures went from 10+°F below normal to 10+°F above. The nets are down in Crandon, so no tennis, but there was golf! The course is in great shape unless you stray from the fairway and land in a leaf pile. In that case, good luck. The water hazards are fast becoming more leafy than watery. Before the weekend, the wind died down. Lucerne got flat, but nobody skied. The wind picked back up and then some for the weekend. The weather was dry for much of the week. This was particularly enjoyed by those that choose to dabble in the northern Wisconsin art of late season garage construction. The snow early in the week knocked out the power in the area for several hours. The webcam on Knott Lane came back fine, but the Waters Edge camera did not. It looks like it'll need a little motivational attention next week to be sure it's up for ice-in. It's getting close to that time of year where the annual ice-in contest is posted. As measured by the page clicks, the interest in this contest has waned in the past few years. I'll put a post on the facebook to see if you guys still want to make a game of it or just want a report.

-Nemo's concerned about the Silence of the Squirrels.
