Hot, Hot, Hot. Then Not.

As the title of this page implies, last week started off hot. The high temperature went over 90°F on one day and was in the 80's°F on many others. The lake temperature on the North end approached 75°F and all was right with the world. That ended on Sunday.

During much of the hot part of last week, the weather was underscored by visually fiery sunsets.

If you looked up during the hot period, it was likely that you'd see eagles as they floated on thermals over the lake.

A few late-to-the-party geese were spotted flapping above, landing on, and taking off from the lake.

During the heat, some grabbed what the weather offered and toiled at fruit production.

The sugarmen took advantage of the sweltering heat to mine a cord or so of quality wood.

Others just sat in the sun and worked on their tans.

There was also a ski show that was not rained out!

The acts were well lit and in mid-summer form.

While taunting fish and diving for golf balls on Thursday, we saw some weather pummel the South end of the lake. Reports from the "other end" of the lake described the rain as worse than the July 1996 "Weekend of Watery Doom!". We can not confirm this in that we were not paddling around in the storm like we were during the events of July, 1996.

The storm would eventually make its wrath felt on the North end of the lake. Had someone in our party not occasionally stopped to take a few pictures, we would have made it back to the bar in a more dry state .

A half an inch does not sound like much, but when you get it all in about 15 minutes, it's pretty exciting. Add some lightning and almost continuous thunder, and it was well worth the cost of admission.

Lesser, mostly un-forecasted, rain blessed Lucerne all weekend.

The weekend's weather included strange rainbows.

There are some, I'm looking at you Kurt, that are suggesting that Summer is over and the start of Autumn in upon us. Quiet, you. These little islands of 64°F highs can be thought of as rest areas embedded in the Summer to allow many to catch their breath and heal up for the next bout of hot. In addition to healing, these little patches of cool can make mowing and wood cutting an almost pleasant event. As the evening approaches in the northwoods, whatever the temperature, the daytime winds wind down and the setting sun paints the sky with unforgettable colors. This continues to be one of the best events of all, as long as you don't forget the bug spray.
