Smorgasbordic Summer

June 13th through 19th, 2022

Lake Lucerne
Last week had a little of everything. There was a high of 66°F. Then, a day later, there was a high of 84°F. There was also calm and wind, sun and rain, and puppies and squirrels. The only thing missing was snow and ice. "Missing" may not be the right word choice in that nobody we know missed snow and ice.

The rain last week was brief but intense. If you looked up on Wednesday evening, you could sort of tell it was coming.
Lake Lucerne
It hit right at ski show time. This was the second time in a row that the show was canceled due to rain.
Lake Lucerne
After the storm, the area took on a weird pink/purple tone.
Lake Lucerne
We ended up with just over an inch of rain on the North end. The South end reported over 2 inches. The lake level was starting to go down before the rain. After the rain, not so much.
Lake Lucerne
With every pond and puddle around the lake having a frog or three, the nights are increasingly filled with frog song.
Lake Lucerne
Eagles, both mature and adolescent, are becoming more active around the North end of Lucerne.
Lake Lucerne
The hummingbirds are continuing to drain feeders daily.
Lake Lucerne
Amazingly, seed munching birds are also emptying feeders daily.
Lake Lucerne
Just before day's end, the birds seem to gather by the seeds and suet to watch the sunset
Lake Lucerne
On many evenings, they were not disappointed.
Lake Lucerne
The weather has the bar's lime tree producing its first crop. Watch for "Locally Grown Gin and Tonic Night" coming to the North end of Lucerne in 30 to 45 days.
Lake Lucerne
A brief survey of the the lake confirmed that most piers and docks are in.
Lake Lucerne
The lake could be warmer. Saturday's low of 44°F didn't help.
Lake Lucerne
Last week's eclectic mix of temperatures and other weather may have left those that feasted on the northwoods adding some antacid to the usual summertime mix of ice-packs, Ibuprofen, and energy drinks. Judging from the number of fishermen, the fishing seems good. The skiing/watercraft set are also becoming more active, especially during the weekends. With the cost of gas almost as high as the lake level, we would expect ski runs to be shorter and tuber infections to go into remission soon unless they cut back spending in other areas. As long as the cutbacks do not include ice-packs, Ibuprofen, and energy drinks, we'll be fine.
