Wet, Warm, and Greener

May 9th through 15th, 2022

Until last Monday, it's been cold up here. The cold extended the maple syrup season, ice out, and hat wearing. Last week started off warm and the temperatures accelerated from there. It was about time. At the start of the week, the warm came with a little bluster. The breeze combined, with the high lake level, watered downwind lawns several feet from the shoreline. The wind was eventually joined by rain. Then precipitation of a more solid nature. Some of the hail stones were over an inch. There were a few calm and muggy periods between the storms. After a few days the weather moved on and the sun came out. The sunshine revealed a wetter, greener northwoods. The resulting lawn lakes put the kibosh on most mowing events. All the storms added together amounted to just under 2 inches of rain. We checked the lake level after all the weather, it's just 2 inches shy of the record set last year. Some were more happy with the rain and warm than others. All the plants seemed to love it. You could almost see the ferns moving as they popped up and stretched in the sunlight. The trillium went from nothing to everywhere. An understanding between the bar and local squirrels was reached. If protection was paid (in seeds), the fuzzies would not raid the bird feeder. Squirrels: Small, furry, not to be trusted. During much of the week, campfires of impressive size dotted the shoreline. By Sunday, the gray of the trees had been replaced by Spring green. There were also rainbows after a brief, golf canceling storm on Saturday evening. Even more eventful was the passing of a Starlink constellation on Sunday night. It looked like a glowing plane contrail about 5 full moons long made of tiny dots of light. Alas, we did not have a camera for the rainbows and did not have it set up properly for the glowing contrail show. We'll get 'em next time! (shakes fist at sky). Last week, especially the weekend, could have been described as July, but cooler weather is forecast. This is fine for this time of year. The cooler days are good for many Spring time tasks. Gardens need planting, piers need putting in, and lawns increasingly need a good mowing. Hopefully the cooler will come with a good helping of dryer.

-Nemo's planning an early, extended Squirrel Ball Season.
