The One With Squirrel Ball

July 19th through 25th, 2021

About half of the days last week had temperatures that were below normal, about half were above average. The hotter days occurred on or near the weekend and had plenty of sun to go with that heat. There was some humidity on the weekend, too. Before the hot weekend, there were ski shows. Last Monday's show enjoyed the warmth that spilled over from the previous weekend. Wednesday's show was a little cooler. And rougher. The cooler part and the warmer part of last week were separated by a little rain. Lake Schaefer is back! Now the trip to get some of that tasty broasted chicken can include a ski run or two. Not sure what's the deal with the buoys. It's unclear whether it's a very tight slalom run or another slow/no wake zone. The rain ended and the heat began on Saturday morning, just in time for "Kentuck Day" in Crandon. The well attended festival had many craft items for sale and a very long line at the lemonade stand. Squirrel bar relations got worse over the weekend with the invention of Squirrel Ball. The rules are simple. When a squirrel begins to raid the bird feeder, the player gives the rope that holds the feeder in place a sharp jolt. One point is awarded to the bar if the squirrel is dislodged and hits the ground with a satisfying thump. If the tenacious ball of ADHD manages to hold on, Team Squirrel gets the point. While no squirrels were harmed, judging from the of volume and quality of squirrel profanity after the bar scored a point, the red, furry balls were very annoyed. Squirrel Ball! Come for the sugar water, stay the the satisfying thump! Traffic on the lake during the weekend was described by some as heavy. Others described it as horrific. All would agree it was loud. Chipping a golf ball from the shore into the bucket on the raft saw many go too long. Or too short. XXXLt managed to hole a shot late Sunday as I was diving to collect all the long and short shots. Diving was made more comfortable by the sunshine and 78°F water. Going forward, there's just one more Monday ski show on Lucerne and then it's August. August is a fickle month. It can be the start of Fall with cold mornings and some color in the trees or it can be filled with hot sunshine and cicada sound. We're hoping for the cicada and sunshine one.

-Nemo was winning 4-2 when the balls quit the game.
