Beyond Toasty, Occasionally Damp

June 7th through 13th, 2021

Last week continued where the previous week left off. That, plus some rain. In a normal year, we'd get about a dozen Summer days that could be described hot and most of them are at the end of July or the beginning of August. The peak summer like warmth has pushed the lake temperature to 74°F as of Sunday. The water temperature is a tricky thing. On the North end of the lake, if the wind is from the South, it has pushed up to 77°F. When the wind comes from the North, the temperature goes down. While diving for golf balls, we found that below about 8 feet the water gets icy no matter which way the wind blows. We never got an exact temperature, but it feels like under 60°F. Last Wednesday, the first ski show of the year hit the water. The second show is scheduled for Wednesday, June 16 at 6:30 PM at Waters Edge with a pre-show starting sometime before then. The day before the ski show we got a quarter of an inch of rain. A few days after we were pummeled with 1.25 inches. The plants seem to like the wetter hot of last week. And the lawn puddles are back. The water temperature of these ponds is warmer than the lake and there's no thermocline. The water on these smaller lakes tends to be flatter too unless someone is mowing. The hot and wet has made weekly mowing of the bar's lawn mandatory. We had planned on mowing the new neighbor's too, but that property is a little lower and I forgot my PFD. The dump has a new resident. He thinks he's people. His name is Dave. Try not to step on him. The strange, fuzzy bird is back. The painted turtle of West Shore Drive is also back and surprisingly fast (for a turtle). On Sunday evening another wet weather event hit the lake. We got less than a tenth of an inch of rain, but for what the storm lacked in rain, it made up with hail. No one skied. Lake Lucerne has settled into a Summer pattern of Boat traffic, campfires, and laughter during the weekends and calm, quiet, and loon song during the weekdays. If this weather holds, we don't see that ending until after Labor Day. If this weather holds. I can't help but remember the Summer of 1992. During that year we were blessed with very similar early June weather only to have it turn all autumn-bly before the 4th of July. It's said that history does not repeat itself but instead hiccups. Time to give Summer 2021 a big glass of water, or make it hold its breath, or breathe into a paper bag or something. Hopefully that could push this summer into October.

-Nemo loves Summer, mosquitos not so much.
