Last week started off a little cool. Gone were the 80°F+ highs and accompanying brutal humidity. Air conditioners were turned off and many were looking for the first signs of color in the trees. There was not a small amount of debate on whether Summer would fade quietly into Fall or return with the sun and heat that would rewarm the lake and blister the paint from the cabin. By the weekend, it was clear it was the blistery one.
Early in the week, cool mornings resulted in a steaming Lake Lucerne. The lake temperature plunged close to 70°F. Swimming included more screaming and those that splashed the dry were shunned for hours.
It took a few days, but Summer has ramped back up to 4th of July like levels. The peak Summer heat should warm the lake to less gaspy levels. This will hopefully make checking off some of the 2020 Summer Schedule items easier. Look for items like swimming (5 points), diving (2 points), Skiing (3 points), knee boarding (2 points), floating (1 point), and raft tipping (3 points) to get major play next week. Given the lateness of the season, the current state of the Summer Schedule, and the weather, it's time for the exhausted and achy to make one more great Summer effort. Energy drinks and ibuprofen may be mandatory. You also might want to check the batteries in the dockside defibrillator.
