July 8th through 14th, 2019

July is usually warm. Last week added 10°F to the usual. If not for the large body of 75°F crystal clear water, it would have been uncomfortable. July can also be wet. Last week added about an inch to the usual. The lake level remains high. July is good for birds of prey. Last week had a local eagle cruising the North end of the lake looking for thermals and food. July can be a good month for food. Both plant based and fuzzy. The Fuzzies got more tetchy when that big, eagle shaped shadow passed close by. July heat, when coupled with wet, makes plants explode with leaves, buds, and flowers. The extra warm of last week seems to have doubled that. July ski shows at Water's Edge are held on both Mondays and Wednesdays. All the acts are good, but crossovers are our favorite. July pyramids are our second favorite. July eagles were still hunting up the North end of Lake Lucerne at the end of the week. I'd expect that they'll be back next week to frighten the fuzzy, scare the ducks, and munch the fish. July was almost halfway over by the end of last week. If the second half of July is anything like the first half, exhausted smiles will be common come August. In a normal year, the lake level begins a slow retreat around the middle of July. This year, it's holding onto the gains made over the long Winter and short Spring. Some longtime lake residents have told me that this was the natural level of the lake during the 70's, 80's, and early 90's. I have a few pictures that would seem to confirm that, so I guess we should get used to it. Saturday's bar night had just a smattering of Malort (Malort, the product of a gypsy curse).

-Nemo plans to spend the next 2 weeks in, on, and under the lake.
