The Mosquitoes Are Awful!

May 27th through June 2nd

The spaces North of Hwy 64 greened up nicely last week. It was warm, occasionally sunny, and the frost has finally left the ground. It's starting to feel like Summer. The rain that kicked off the week was only about half the amount we got last time. Still, it was enough to hold the extremely high lake level. The lake temperature peaked at 60°F during the weekend. Swimmer's mental health was upgraded from completely insane to mildly disturbed. A cold front came through on Saturday. The strong wind from the North pushed warmer surface water to the islands. The North end of the lake got the great welling up of November. Swimming again became an activity for the completely insane. During a normal year the trillium season would be over. The lateness of this year's Spring has pushed the 3 petalled blossoms well into June. The sunset on Thursday was strange due to a high haze from wild fires in Alberta. Most of the week's other sunsets were haze free and rather pleasant.. The first ski show of the year is just over a week away. With this deadline in mind, orders were sent out to put in the show dock at Water's Edge. The high lake level made for some interesting challenges. The cold, rough water didn't help. In the end, adding 2 feet of buoyant wood to extend the stilts didn't work out so well. The rest of the show dock will be placed when the water is warmer and flatter sometime between now and the first show (Wednesday, June 12th at 6:30 PM with the pre-show starting around 6:10 PM). Campfires dotted the shoreline during the weekend. The air was warm during much of the day, but when the sun went down, a deep chill romped through the northwoods. The bugs, specifically the mosquitoes, are plentiful. And hungry. A loosely organized resistance to the pestilence is fighting back with chemicals, harsh language, and sticks, but currently the bugs have the upper hand (and any other uncovered fleshy bits). If you are planning to come up to the lake, bring plenty of bug spray and Benadryl® for after action relief.

-Nemo's all DEETed up with swatters in both hands.
