Zombie Winter!

April 24th through 30th, 2017

Last week started off like Spring. There was sun, temperatures above freezing, ice free roads, a few more piers were put in and there were even reports of a few less-than-sane people skiing. Spring was not just confined to the water. The forest floor also displayed ample evidence that Spring was alive and flourishing and, more importantly, that Winter was dead. Near the weekend, that changed. The cold, undead hand of Winter left the roads un-ice free, the lawns un-green, and the lake un-lower. The Third Horseman of the Snowpocalypse, ZOMBIE WINTER, paid the northwoods a 3 plus inch visit. Before ZOMBIE WINTER and its minions painted the area white there was an icing event sandwiched between the snow and two solid inches of rain. Lovely if you like to shovel wet, heavy snow and don't have a tee time, otherwise not so much. The snow did not reach down to the extreme southwestern part of the lake area. I don't think we would have attempted the walk on the pedestrian bridge over Hoover Dam had it been icy. It's unnerving enough as it is. The walk along the shaking, swaying path rewards the sure footed with a drone like view of the dam. The stroll over the bridge would be easier if we had wings like these guys. But then it would be annoying having people touching your toes for luck all day. Lake Mead is currently about 120 feet below its nail. Lots and lots of snow in the mountains should push that up, but it won't be back to an un-low level anytime soon. The low lake levels have exposed items that had been under 120 feet of water for decades. Seeing them is sort of like SCUBA diving, but without any of the training or equipment. By the end of the weekend, Knott Lane was again snow free. There was no small amount of debate on the identity of the Horseman of the Snowpocalypse that slapped up the area over the weekend. Some claimed it was the work of Silenced Spring. Others insisted it was the calling card of ZOMBIE WINTER. It was a close call, but because the thermal assault occurred in April the identity was confirmed to be the latter. There was less debate about it being a good time to be away from the lake planning the Summer than actually experiencing the last throws of Winter on its shore.
