The name of the current month, January, is derived from the Roman god Janus. It is also the name of the Fourth Horseman of the Snowpocalypse. Like Janus, January (the horseman, not the month) is usually depicted as having two faces. One face representing snow and the other cold. Thus far, we have been spared a gaze from the snow face (mostly) but there has been no shortage of the cold stare. January gave Lake Lucerne the stink(y cold) eye last week.

January is often described as riding on a road frozen with ice and snow (See Knott Lane's current state).

Not much snow fell last week. Instead, strong winds created snow devils that danced up the lake and on the faces of fishermen.

By mid week, the blue sky clouded up. Many times when the clouds come in the temperatures rise. Not last week. It stayed cold.

The bonked cabin on Knott Lane now has a delightful little pile of very cold firewood. Huzzah!

Yesterday (Sunday, January 8th) we set out to check the ice. It took a while to get down to the juicier parts of the lake.

Eleven point five inches. Thick enough to support the girthiest of northwoods residents.

During days such as these, it's fun to huddle in a warm house, sip a hot beverage, and review the archives from last Summer's water ski show. One of my favorite was when the Jazz line encountered a wave of unusual size (<a href='https://www.crandonwatershows.com/archives/2016/show03/indexB.html' class ='defaultlink2' target='_blank'>Ski Show III, Act 5</a>).

In case you were wondering, they made it in an amazing show of skiwomanship.

Unless you count the runners on the front of the snow-goes buzzing around everywhere, there was no ski show last Wednesday. Or Monday. Or on the 4th. The air was too cold and the ice was too thick. There is a philosophy that postulates to experience the joy of a thing you first must suffer its absence. The deeper the suffering the greater the joy. If January continues in the same manner as last week, we are so going to enjoy the heck out of Summer.<br><br><br>-Nemo, "One, Two, Three...Tips Up!"
