Summer, 'cept for the Water
April 28th through May 4th

The weather last week was far more Summerific than Springola. The air reached into the 70's (℉), there was golf without jackets, boats were on the lake, and there were bugs. The lake water and leaves were the only items lagging out of phase. The former being cold and the latter being absent.

Then there was the rain. We didn't get any.

Creeks flowing into the lake are still trickling, but we need rain to continue to keep them on the happy side of moist.

Did we mention that the water is cold? Forty eight degrees Fahrenheit is better than the last two years at this time, but swimming is still extraordinarily unfun.

With the water unfun, the only logical thing to do was trim trees. It's not so much what you trim but what you leave.

The remaining trees extracted their revenge for the extreme trimming by filling the atmosphere with pollen. We really need a good rain to filter the yellow from the air before all with lungs suffer anaphylaxis.
Small furries are out and active. As are the fishers. This one claimed to have caught a fish this big.

Did we mention the bugs? Many don't bite, but they do have an affinity for flying into head holes. GUARD YOUR HEAD HOLES!

Some are bigger and more noisy than others.

The trees, not content with filling the air with allergens, also bombed drone photos of the lake.

As a side note, Devils lake is also ice free.

Not a lot of green in them thar hills. That should change in the next week or so as will the lawn mowing hiatus that's been going on for 7 months now. After the trees and mowers awake from their long Winter hibernation, skiers, footers and kayakers should not be far behind. It'll still be awhile before any sane swimmers will be seen splashing about. The lake is starting May 15 inches below the nail. It has not been up that high since mid 2007! We're toying with the idea of a ice in/ice out-like contest for the lake level, but really hoping that the lake will go above the nail before that page is written and posted. We'll see.
