Deep Freeze

February 17th through 23rd, 2015

Lake Lucerne
We had some sunny days last week, implying warmth or at least less cold. Ha!
Lake Lucerne
It's usually about 10 degrees Fahrenheit warmer next to the bar, where the outdoor temperature sensor is located. If you enjoy tossing pans of boiling water into the air to make snow, this was your week.
Lake Lucerne
The shadows of wood burner stacks on Knott Lake indicated who was up at the lake and who was not.
Lake Lucerne
We have been a little light in the snow department, but we still have a bit.
Lake Lucerne
Late in the week, we launched the drone to scout out the soon to be tapped maples just off the west shore of the lake.
Lake Lucerne
They were still there.
Lake Lucerne
The North end of Lake Lucerne looked smaller from here.
Lake Lucerne
Taking off from the narrow confines was not an exercise for the faint hearted. Landing was even less fun, but both went well.
Lake Lucerne
There's 16.5 inches of very solid ice covering the lake.
Lake Lucerne
For the first underwater picture of the year, this wasn't too bad (correct focus, exposure, bubbles.)

Point:

Fire and Ice
By Robert Frost

Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I’ve tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.

Counter Point:

Winter too Frosty
By Nemo

Robert Frost has remarked
That destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.
But having lived the last few weeks
Going down to the lake
And freezing our beaks
We now know, in our guts,
That Robert Frost was totally nuts

Special Bonus Section
Knottlane Lake Lucerne Winter Survival Tips!

1) If the kids are going outside for longer than 5 minutes, have them take along a small ziplock bag in which to place snapped off pieces of kid (toes, fingers, nose). Unless the kids have the same blood type, it's best to give each one their own bag to avoid part mixing later at the clinic.

2) The smart gardener will periodically check the enthalpy of the puddles of liquified gasses to get a jump on the spring planting season.

3) When pounding nails into maple boards with a banana, be sure to wear safety goggles just in case the banana or board or nail shatters.
