Deer Hunt 2014 : The Soupening
November 17th through 24th   


Last Sunday, in the extreme southwestern area of the lake, the day started like several of the past Sundays. It was sunny, not very cool, with some palms waving gently in the breeze. We left for the lake to get a first hand account of Lucerne's Fall weather.


There are some hills between the exteme southwestern corner area and the lake (the Rockies). Driving through the passes and turns is kinda fun when I-76 is dry and hot. Not so much when it's ice covered (in spots) and cold.


There are no gently waving palms at Lake Lucerne.


There is some snow though.

The calendar called for the opening of gun deer season. The weather called for soup. Hot soup. Five types of hot soup were prepared and ready for local hunters by sunset on Saturday.
In addition to soups of many types, there were soft drinks, beer, mixed drinks and shots. Some shots even included special eyewear.

On Sunday, shoveling in conjunction with a warm up, cleared the deck. The roads have improved somewhat but are still slushy and ugly in spots..
Before the small thaw and despite a temperature of about 15 F and a brutal wind from the northwest, we got the drone up to check ice-in.


In the battle to freeze the lake for 2014, some parts of the lake have 3 inches of ice and other parts are ice free. The weekend thaw has given a temporary victory to the open water faction but, if the forecast is even close to correct, this gain will be short lived. It's unlikely for Lake Lucerne to have any open water by next weekend. Until official ice-in, we'll be giving front page reports several times a day on the state of the ice.
