Wet,Wonderful, but Dark too Early

September 2nd through 8th, 2014

Lake Lucerne
It rained last weekend and then got sunny in time for the Knott Lane Open. The rain came back on Labor Day and the sun was back for the LLAA golf outing on Tuesday. The lake was ski-able rain or shine. We prefer shine.
Lake Lucerne
On Tuesday the rain gauge was emptied. After all the weekend storms, 1.7 inches of rain water was added to the lake. That's good.
Lake Lucerne
It started Wednesday late. Rain. By Friday, the creek near the bar, dry since early July, was flowing again.
Lake Lucerne
Storm totals of 3+ inches were filed by other gauges. We got 3.7 inches on the North end of the lake. The lake hasn't been this high since July, 2008. More rain is forecast this week. Floating boats off lifts is going to be easy this Fall. Yay!
Lake Lucerne
Trees are still mostly green and local bug eaters are not starving. By next weekend, there will be much more color in them trees but still enough bugs to keep bug eaters fat and happy.
Lake Lucerne
The North end of the lake was being fished harder last week than we can remember at any time since ice-out.
Lake Lucerne
Rain. We've needed lots for over half a decade. Last week, we got lots. The lake has gone up 24 inches since April of 2013 and is now at 21 inches below the nail. A wet Fall, Winter and Spring could well bring us back to normal and beyond, but it's best not to count our liters until they fall. The lake has been super ski-able for the past few days now. The only real beef with the past few days has been their length. With sunset getting closer to 7:00 PM many are running out of day before running out of play. And the result of this truncated sunshine? Not pretty. Golf has suffered as has tennis and tanning. The light situation is not expected to get better for 8 months or so (unless you count full moons (fyi: The DNR does not count full moons, ie. Don't ski after sunset during a full moon, not that anyone reading this has ever entertained such an activity)). To boost the sagging morale of the endarkened, Throwback Thursday will return this week.
