On this fine Fall week, there was a bit of frost on the pumpkins. On top of that frost was some snow and on top of that there was a nice coat of ice. Surrounding that pumpkin/frost/snow/ice were some delightful monosyllabic temperatures (One, Two, Five, you get the picture.) The lows for the week were two-worded, unless you feel that the minus part of the temperature (minus three, minus nine, minus fourteen) should be implied this time of year.
Before the real cold set in, there was an unfortunate warming that turned the snow on the ground into slush. The extreme cold turned that slush into really hard ice. I can't remember Knott Lane being in worse condition. A dusting of snow over a bruisingly smooth ice surface makes for some slow, careful walking.
Sure it's cold outside and that has put the kibosh on some northern Wisconsin recreation. Not a lot of water skiing going on nor swimming, golf or Rafto!. Still, there are plenty of fun things to do here on the numb shores of Lake Lucerne. Christmas lights are starting to spring up around the area, spreading cheer and an illusion of warmth (aaah, sweet warmth). There's free ice-cream at the Mole Lake casino on Tuesdays and Thursdays, which is good but seems a little cruel in a mocking sort of way (Hey customer, pretty cold outside eah? How about a nice frozen treat!). There's also warmer (aaah, sweet warmth) temperatures predicted for next week. They're talking close to twenty degrees Fahrenheit. Thinking of breaking out the cabana shirts and ice-out contest code!
