The condition code of Knott Lane has gone from red (the color most associated with the hue of bruises compiled by falling on the ice) to brown (the color most associated with spring mud).

The week started off more Spring like than any other this year.  Sunny skies and temperatures just a few degrees below normal promised the beginning of the end of Winter's cruel reign.

More snow was not a welcome sight, but it did make it easier to spot the wild turkeys roaming the north end of the lake.

Spring was not to last.  Deep, dark clouds moved in mid-week and have taken up residence ever since.  The clouds brought snow.  How wonderful.

It took about an hour to run it through a plate filter and can it.  Both batches had great color.  The second was a bit more maple-y.

In addition to turkey spotting, the cooler weather has also been great for the production of maple syrup.  This is a picture of the second batch of the year to be processed.

Lake Lucerne has entered that strange time of year where the ice covering the lake is itself covered with water flowing in (from both rain and melting snow).  Unforunately the frost is mostly out of the ground.  Streams of snow melt that had been hoped would flow in to the lake are instead soaking in to the ground.  Looks like, barring a really big storm, we can't count on the watershed to bring the lake back up.  With all that water in the ground, maybe the springs will be up to the task.  All we need is about 48 inches to bring it back to normal.  The lake ice is estimated to be over 20 inches thick.  We spent all our ice hole drilling time collecting sap and firing cookers.  We'll get a hole in the ice to measure as soon as the sun comes out.  I'm thinking Friday.  The NCC is still closed/covered with snow. -Nemo called for a tee time, the phone just rang.              Previous  Next
