Lake Lucerne 2012 Ice-In Report II

The new Town of Lincoln town hall is getting done. It looks bigger in person. I'll bet it's huge enough for a large wedding reception. Lake Metonga is still open-ish. There's plenty of open water in the middle, but it's ice choked on the sides. By Monday it could be ice covered. Lake Wabikon froze over on Saturday, December 8th. Usually Lucerne ices over about a week or two after Wabikon. Lake Lucerne is open from the boat landing to the north end. The water is cold and crystal clear. The ice we found on the shore of the boat landing was this thick. It was a bit thicker on the edges of the north end. The Ice was just thick enough on the edges of the north end to watch tossed rocks punch through with a satisfying splash. Huzzah! Smaller rocks would just lodge in the sheet. Boo! As this is written, the first named storm of the season is hitting. Snowstorm aLf is beginning to make the lane pretty to see, ugly to drive on. The stop sign on the corner of Potawatomi Trail and Lake Lucerne Drive was taken out on Saturday night. A lesser sign (sans This could be the last Ice-In report. Twenty five feet of ice sheet leaped from the shore on Friday night. It wasn't that cold on Friday night. By Sunday large bergs of ice were spotted bridging the west and east shores for a time. A strong wind from the North or South will sweep the thin layer to the shore if a large enough fetch of open water remains. No wind events are predicted in the near future and the open water is getting smaller and smaller. Colder temperatures, little wind, snow.
