Saturday evening was best spent watching the sun set and the pontoon boats head for shore by a small campfire. Due to the lack of rain so far this year, it's best to have a small, well controlled fire or none at all. Fire danger around the lake area is posted as extreme at the ranger station in Laona.
The wind picked up on Sunday as did the surf. Riptide warning were issued, local weathermen were issued tickets for violating no wake zones.
Being up without a car, with only feet or a bike to get around, can make you more aware of the sounds of spring. The wind in the trees, waves on the shore, birds, and bears*: they are all softly quiet this time of year. The only possible exception are those noisy spring peepers at night. We'll be back next weekend.
*A pack (herd?, group?, grump?) of 5 bears (1 female, 1 male, and 3 cubs) are raiding bird feeders on the north end of the lake. I'll try to get pictures next week.
