First Spring Weekend

March 23rd through 25th, 2007

Lake Lucerne
Saturday morning was great. Sunny and warm (for spring) with a lite, sweet breeze.
Lake Lucerne
Nothing has changed on the jobsite at Timber Shores since last week. The ground is very wet.
Lake Lucerne
The snow is off the lake and the sides are just starting to pull away.
Lake Lucerne
All the runoff from the thaw is filling streams flowing into the lake. The sound of running water can be heard throughout the area both day and night.
Lake Lucerne
Having bummed a ride up with LT, I found that the only personel transportation I had was an old bike. If you ever bike to town from the north end of the lake, know that the worst part is the hill at the start. Once that's finished the rest is easy with the possible exception of taking "action pictures" while hurtling downhill on Hwy 8 on a bike with tires that are mostly round...mostly.
Lake Lucerne
If you are at all familiar with Crandon, you have seen the lot next to Wilson's that on occasion has cars and boats for sale. The only thing for sale this week was much more interesting.
Lake Lucerne
The 1974 Bombardier Muskeg squats on wide tracks and has a powerful winch. The perfect vehicle for the man that really misses his tank.
Lake Lucerne
I'm not sure of the gas mileage this sporty 2 seater gets, but if you have any stumps that need pulling and are searching for a tool for the job look no further. If you get it, I want a ride.
Lake Lucerne
After a few chores, it was time to check the ice depth.
Lake Lucerne
There was 17 inches of solid ice on Saturday. It will be thinner next Saturday.
Lake Lucerne
The sap was flowing and the cookers were fired into service all weekend.
Lake Lucerne
The boil was hard and the smell sweet. A few hours later, this was syrup.
Lake Lucerne
A great rain storm hit the area early Sunday. Then the fog rolled in. It was rainy and foggy for the rest of the day. With almost 2 inches of rain on the ground and more coming, the lake level should go up. I hope so. It's really low.
