Pumpkin Carving Weekend

October 25th through 27th, 2002

Snow! On Friday there was still some snow on the ground and the weather was unseasonably cold. The weather station was setup. This is the wind sensor. The rain sensor will be setup in 2 weeks. This is the temperature/pressure sensor We also setup a water temperature sensor. Due to a technical error, the water temperature is called the soil temperature on the weather web page. Saturday started off better but then really clouded up and ended with a light rain/snow mix. Pods! To be more precise milkweed pods. Late Saturday morning while wandering around on the north shore we saw what first appeared to be an abandoned pontoon boat but instead turned out to be a.... Ghost Raft! On very still nights, when all is calm, if you listen very carefully you can hear wails and shrieks from somewhere south of here, "Where's our raft? Where is our freaking raft!?" The birch tree called "Shadow Caster" was pruned marking the dawn of a new "Golden Age for Tanning" on the dock.. George Hamilton was notified. Shadow caster trimmings were used to entertain a small child and one Art Kumbalek who appears much younger and more female in person. The lake monster returned to terrorize as many as he could... Art Kumbalek was not phased. Instead of fleeing in horror he pelted the "knobshine" with snowballs. Stunned by well aimed snowballs and dismayed by his inability to inspire fear in Art Kumbalek, the lake monster floated away. All the time hoping not to be mistaken for a missing raft. A record number of pumpkins were, in some cases carved, in other cases mutilated and in one instance disfigured. On the whole the pumpkins turned out pretty well. Fall, A time to pay up on old foolish bets. Jeff bet the Brewers would not lose 100 games this year. If they did he would drink a shot of gin, the most feared of all beverages. The Brewers final record: 56-106. We all had a sympathy shot with him (not gin though). Jeff savors the complex botanicals that can only be from gin or is he cherishing the end of the Brewers season. One thing is certain. He made no bets for next year. Professor Grant has left and the lake seems to be just waiting to freeze over. On Sunday morning the weather turned better and everyone was happy. By Sunday the snow had all but gone but there was still plenty of hay at 52 and w. Dean could not show up due to his busy "Pumpkin Modeling" schedule and lengthy community service obligation (I told him that West Allis was not a "Pants Optional" community). Sunday was so nice we did not want to leave, but we still wanted to be paid. In the end we left for work on Monday.

-Nemo
