The Heart of Summer
July 24th through August 1st, 1999          


The last week in July, with its long days punctuated by warm nights, seemed to be engineered to maximize the beauty of Lake Lucerne. The fishing is great, the swimming is great, the skiing is great, and don't get us started on the view.


Cranking up the ski boat has become a tiny bit, or more accurately, two tiny bits easier this year.


There's a channel joining Lake Wabikon to Lake Riley. You can get to Riley by hiking through the forest and braving the flocks of black flies that swarm the lake's shore or you can take the largely fly free channel. We took the channel.


The island on Wabikon was camped upon. We didn't get the best camp site (the one on the south end with the big rock), but the secondary camp site on the west side of the island was nice.

The fish were a biting. Mrs. Nemo catched quite a few.
Then she dove down to further taunt 'em. Fishing should continue to be good for the next few weeks.

When not swimming with the fishes, underwater card games were played. The table talk was lowered but Mrs Nemo kept on floating away.
A old launch was dived on late in the week. I think it dates back to before World War II and is in okay shape.


Crack-BOOM. It had not rained for over five weeks. The lake has dropped 16 inches since spring. We needed a storm and a storm we got. With the great light and sound show, came a goodly amount of rain. Take that falling lake level! Of course the lake needs more rain to bring it back to the depths of Spring, but this was a good start. We'll be back in a few weeks to catch some of those big perch and get some final skiing in before the boat pulling of Labor Day.
