Not Comet Weekend

February 14 & 15th, 1997

Lake Lucerne
There were two reasons for us to come North this weekend. First, we needed to do laundry and the laundromats in Milwaukee range from boring to creepy. Second, there were rumors of a good comet to be seen. That was 2 more reasons than necessary to prompt a late Winter visit to the shores of Lucerne.
Lake Lucerne
The first thing we noticed was the depth of snow on the ground and the packed frozen on the roads.

We also are quite sure that nobody has rented cabins 1, 2, and 3 last week.
Lake Lucerne
Huge slabs of snow are starting to slide off the roofs, so maybe that'll change soon.
Lake Lucerne
Knott Lane is in worse condition than most other area roads.
Lake Lucerne
Some cabins on Knott Lane are also losing their snow, but soon there will be no place for the roof drifts to go.

Got the laundry done, but the comet not so much. We journeyed out onto the ice at 1:00 AM, but it wasn't up in the east yet. It turns out that had we checked the West just after sunset we would have had a spectacular view of Hale-Bopp. The plan was to look for it again in the East at around 4:30 AM, but that didn't happen mostly because 4:30 AM. The plan going forward is to make it back to Milwaukee later today to catch the re-release of Star Wars, A New Hope in a theater near us and to catch the comet up here at a later date.
