Skiing, Diving, and Ranch Dressing

July 31st through August 10th, 1996

Having built up our wind during several prior long weekends, we made it up to the lake for an entire week of adventures and, if we do them right, the accompanying exhaustion and trauma. Logistics are good. Supplies of sun for our tans and gas for the ski boats are both near summertime highs. We also had some Bactine® and plenty of bandages. Diving the North end of the lake is a great low impact way to start a week long stay. XXLt's new drag behind the boat toy has a warning label with the word "Death" in it more than once. We took to calling it a "Death Board". Not in any rush to die, I stuck to a ski. Our boat goes fast enough, but takes awhile to get up to speed. While being pulled up, it feels like being in a tunnel of water for about a quarter of a minute. Dining on a pontoon boat became a thing. All in attendance seemed pleased. During one such trip, ranch dressing was discovered to be a tasty vegetable dip and a good hand lotion. Many times after all the swimming, diving, skiing, and ranch dressing, some would drop over with exhaustion. Then someone would whisper sailing, fire tower climbing, or kibble and they'd perk right up. Sailing is always much more fun when the breeze is gale-ish and the lake angry. We only cried "Gilligan!" twice. The trick to a good lightning picture is twofold; One, having lightning, two, holding the umbrella high enough to keep it mostly out of frame while low enough to keep the camera dry (ish). Having a bolt strike the island while the shutter is open is also good. The trick to getting a good sunset picture from the top of the fire tower at Sugarbush Hill is also twofold; One, having a clear evening sky and two not having a serious cardiac event while climbing the tower. A friend decided to have another try at consuming the three ginormous pancakes at The Log Cabin in Crandon. If you're keeping score this year, that's Pancakes : 2, Krispa : 0. After his ignominious defeat, we hauled his bloated corpse back to the lake for more skiing. There are no pictures from the first Lake Lucerne Ship to Ship Bottle Rocket War, but this accurately sums it up. Let's never speak of it again. We are also questioning the wisdom of playing "Chinese Hydroslide ". Watching and winning is fun, but getting the silver medal can be painful. The Taco John's in Rhinelander closed. To add to this trauma, mid-week we were caught in a storm while walking around the lake. Fortunately, there's another Taco John's in Antigo and our clothes were mostly dry after a day or two. I don't know what it is about getting caught in storms while going around the lake this year, but if this keeps up we'll be renting out our services to any drought stricken area than could use a good walking around. The less said about the first boat to boat bottle rocket war the better. Other than that though, the time we were up flew by and was some of the best of the year. We'll be back after we heal up.

-Nemo, kneeboarder, rain bringer.
