Comet Hyakutake 24 Hours

March 21st through 22nd, 1996

We came up north to do laundry and see Comet Hyakutake., The comets we saw before this one were disappointing, we were not expecting much. We were wrong. You could actually see Hyakutake with the naked eye! We were amazed.

After being amazed and en-coldened, we warmed up with beer nuts and wine.

A can of beer nuts and a bottle of wine later, we staggered on to the ice to see the comet again to get some more pictures and amazement.

Friday morning was filled with laundry and pleasantly warm air (60°F in the sunlight!) after a cold and comet filled night.

The bottle rocket war forts have seen better days.

The rafts, piers, and boats will be back in the water in just a few more weeks if this weather continues.

The ice is still pretty thick, so I don't think we'll be further amazed by a March ice-out. But that's okay, I don't think that any more amazement would be possible. To the unaided eye, the "Great Comet of 1996" looked like a bright fuzzy ball with a slight, very slight, greenish tint.
