Summer of 1984

July 21st through August 4th, 1984

Lake Lucerne
It's been a year since our last visit "Up North". It's still here, not much has changed. There's still plenty of swimming, skiing, hiking and fishing to be had.
Lake Lucerne
When the fishermen return, the dark side of fish catching is upon us. Fish cleaning. It's at this point that those that find this particular task among the more odious, flee.
Lake Lucerne
Fleeing can take many forms. Putting on a display of skin divership so close to the fish cleaning shack is not recommended. The chances of being within earshot of being drafted into the knife brigade is too great.
Lake Lucerne
Fleeing on horseback at the Lake Lucerne Riding Stables is a better choice.
Lake Lucerne
Escaping to the fire tower at Sugerbush Hill is also good. You can still see the island on Lake Wabikon from the top.
Lake Lucerne
Looking to the West from the top of the tower, you see the "Sponge Forest" but not Lake Lucerne. The lake is mostly blocked by the big ridge on the East shore.
Lake Lucerne
Now that we are more familiar with the skills involved, sailing is not as brutal as it once was. The "Raft of Many Injuries" is just as punishing as ever.
Lake Lucerne
Putting temperamental, high compression engines on wee, tiny boats can be fun in a we-cheated-death sort of way.
Lake Lucerne
Then there's water skiing. While we're not yet at the water show level (some of us have just learned) all enjoy making passes in front of the resort.
Lake Lucerne
And the crashes can be very photographic.
Lake Lucerne
Some of us footed for the first time. We were told that when the spray is blow the knees, the speed is just about right. Above the knees means it's a little slow. Our current boat may be a bit under-powered for footing.
Lake Lucerne
The lodge was closed all week. Bumper pool, ping-pong, puck bowling, and pinball were not played all week.
Lake Lucerne
Lined up to the right of the main dock are fishing boats for cabins 1 through 5. They are metal, have anchors, generally don't leak, and are mostly not in use during skiing hours. The lake flattened out several times during the two weeks that we were there to ski it up. No one was severely injured, though not from lack of trying.

-Nemo cleaned a few fish.
