Peak Summer

July 17th through August 7th, 1982

Lake Lucerne
We have always considered the end of July and beginning of August as the very pinnacle of Summer. The days are still long-ish and hot. The nights are mostly warm and short-ish. The Summer of 1982 has followed this pattern.

Raft usage crests this time of year. It's the heart of the Rafto season. When Rafto is over, the popular and injury filled pickup game of "King of the Raft" can be entertaining. Then there's the always popular "Let's lay around the raft and tan until something happens" (Rafto, King of the Raft, Tip the Raft, Hunger, Night, etc.)

There were several days that included a strong wind from the South. During these days the North end of Lake Lucerne becomes rough and un-skiable. Some took advantage of these conditions and have been learning to sail. It turns out that watching people learn how to sail can be as fun, if not more fun, than learning how to sail.

There were more than a few trips to the top of the fire tower at Sugarbush Hill. The view is pretty good from the top. The view from the radio tower just to the North is better, but more Federal offense-y.
Lake Lucerne
There were days where the wind was not from the South. Young people took advantage of the flatness to ski and learn new tricks.

Older people took advantage of these calm days to watch the young people learn new tricks. By the end of the day, it was clear which group was more entertaining and which was more entertained.

On one of the local lesser lakes (Metonga), a boat sinking contest highlighted this year's annual Crandon Crayfish Boil. On the shore there were boiled crayfish, corn, and other foods. On the water, the wooden Timber Shores boat (center left here (borrowed from Uncle Ron)) sank last, taking second place.

There was also a band. I understand The Police were unavailable.

There was fishing, too. And campfires, cards, swimming, goofing off, and mosquitoes. For all the stuff that this summer was, it sure went by fast. One second we were unpacking (Cabin #3!) and rushing to get in a swim before church. Then the next second, or so it seemed, we were taking one last look around and heading back to "civilization". Despite the seemingly shortness of our visit, several accomplishments were tallied. Skiing skills improved. Many mosquitoes were slapped flat. Lake Lucerne is a few fish lighter. Can't wait until next year so we can do it all over again!
