Hot

July 6th through 12th, 2026

There are years where July can be autumnally cold with lows close to frosting and highs better suited for September. This July, so far, is not one of those. It was hot last week with highs pushing well into the 80s°F on most days.

The NCC golf course is in fine shape due in no small part to a sprinkler system and a lack of golfers during the afternoon when the sun blazes and temperatures soar.

The week kicked off, as all weeks in July do, with a ski show.
Lake Lucerne
The show was one of the best of the year.

Just before the show, some of the men were tasked with helping a few LLAA board members investigate reports of a small patch of Eurasian Milfoil on the west shore.

The patch seemed to be a little bigger than originally thought. Nonetheless, it got picked.

It started to cloud up late Tuesday.

Wednesday's ski show was a damp affair with the acts sandwiched between rain events.
Lake Lucerne
It was a pretty good show.

By the time the storms ended early Thursday, the lake was a good two inches deeper.

After the rain, temperatures trended up. Men, women, and pets escaped the heat by diving into the not quite so cool waters of Lake Lucerne.

Under the lake, the fish are getting bigger and more active,

During the weekend, under the lake was the best place to escape the heat.

A few golf balls missed from last year were picked from the bottom like so much Milfoil.

During the hottest part of the week, in keeping with Knott Lane tradition, wood for next year's tapping season was mined, split, and stacked.

Only two or three more cord to go!

We should have skied, golfed, and dove more, but you can cram only so many events into one week before you run out of time, bandages, and energy. With more careful planning, more summer fun could have been stuffed into every day, but summer tends to be a more ad hoc collection of doings like my golf swing or spontaneous human combustion. Swing hard and pray for the best for the former, stay hydrated to prevent the latter.
