Last week began cold and ended cold. In between these twin towers of ice, was a little damp warmness...seasonal damp warmness. In practical terms, it was cold all last week.

There was wind, too. There has not been much snow lately, but the wind picked up what there was and began to sculpt drifts across roads and driveways. Each work of winter was smooth, tapered, and (when deep and long enough) an annoying impediment to local travel.

In the middle of the week, temperatures pushed above freezing and Lucerne got a day of cold rain. The rain melted much of the lake's snow cover. The stuff that survived got shiny and unyielding as more cold moved in.

As the temperature plummeted, the last of the rain fell as snow. Then came the strongest wind of the week. On Lucerne, snow devils twirled from west to east all day Saturday.

The last event of the week was to check on the thickness of Lucerne's ice.

For December, it took longer than expected to drill through it. The footing was pretty much what we've come to expect this close to Christmas.

The almost 10 inches of ice surprised us. That's inches more than normal for this time of year. It's been decades since Lucerne could boast of a yard of ice, but we are heading for +36 inches by St Patrick's day.

As for the quality of the ice, it was hard and clear as crystal.

We could use some snow. Ice, not so much. Got plenty of that thank you. Ice on the lake, fun. Ice on the roads, not fun. The small melt mid-week helped with the roads a little, but there are still ulgy patches of treacherous doom out there. Be careful.<br><br><br>-Nemo's fingers took a while to warm up.
